Flat roofs with skylights and lanterns are becoming ever so popular

Houses with traditional flat felt roofs can often have issues with leaks, so the question is, are properties still being built with flat roofs and if so, why?

We understand the confusion. If you have never lived in a house with a flat roof, or have had to deal with the stress and expense of a failing felt flat roof, it’s hardly surprising that you’d wonder why anyone would choose to design and build a property with a flat roof. You’re also likely to have heard about people having issues with getting a mortgage or securing building insurance on a home with a flat roof.

Yet the fact is that flat roof technology has revolutionised the way we are able to live. Whereas traditional bitumen or asphalt felt roofs have a relatively short lifespan and tend to blister, crack and leak after only a few years, modern flat roofing membranes can last for several decades.

The membranes we install create a waterproof envelope over the whole of the roofing structure. They offer superior strength and performance, with numerous benefits, which include:

  • 100% waterproof
  • Second item
  • Dimensionally stable and unaffected by expansion or contraction
  • Guaranteed never to blister or crack
  • Storm resistant
  • Solar reflective and UV resistant
  • Maintenance free
  • Resistant to moss and algae

So whatever you may assume about flat roofs, perhaps it’s time to look again!

Transforming your conservatory

Installing a conservatory seems like a good idea at the time but as many of us know, they can be virtually inhabitable for much of the year. By building a conservatory with a flat roof and adding inspiring design features such as a Skypod® that unusable room can become a warm and welcoming space that can be utilised on a daily basis.

Adding living space

Increasingly, we want outdoor living space, and as such, homes are being built and modified to include terraces, balconies and roof gardens. We may not be able to rely on the British weather, but high performance, 100% waterproof roofing membrane technology means we can rely on our flat roofs – no matter how large or small – to keep our homes safe and sound against the elements.

Environmentally-minded

There is also a growing trend in green flat roofs; this is a ‘living roof’ that usually consists of grass or sedum and offers endangered birds and other wildlife a new habitat. Green flat roofs are often look on highly favourably when it comes to developers or private builders securing planning consent. They can offer long term financial savings, sustainability and durability.

High-Tech Membrane Roofing also specialise in Green Roof company to provide a flat roofing solution that is more than simply kind to the environment – it helps to protect and regenerate it for future generations.
