"Here at High-Tech Membrane Roofing, we have specifically selected our range of single-ply membrane roofing systems because of their exceptional quality"

Here at High-Tech Membrane Roofing, we have specifically selected our range of single-ply membrane roofing systems because of their exceptional quality, value for money and outstanding performance against the elements. In fact, our flat roofs are maintenance-free.

Proud to work with both domestic and commercial clients across Basildon, Essex, Kent, London and beyond, our roofing systems’ unique surface lacquer is 100% resistant to airborne chemicals and provides an easy-to-clean surface.

That’s right – don’t assume that ‘maintenance-free’ means that you don’t have to clean your flat roof! For example, market-leading uPVC windows and doors are maintenance-free. However, they still need to be cleaned in order to stay looking good and minimise any issues further down the line.

The same is true when it comes to your flat roof.

If the prospect of cleaning your flat roof makes you want to run for the hills, remember that it is in your best interests to keep your roof in optimum condition. A roof is a major investment. Don’t you want it to protect you, your family and belongings for years to come?

Cleaning your flat roof may be a messy, unwanted task, but it only needs to be done every one to two years for you to be able to keep on top of any dirt and debris that can build up over time.

Before you start

The team here at High-Tech Membrane Roofing strongly suggest that before you attempt to clean your flat roof, you seek the advice of a roofing professional. They can advise on the most appropriate cleaning method for your flat roof. Cleaning products and systems will vary depending on the type of flat roofing material used on your property.

Alternatively, if they believe it to be unsafe for DIY cleaning, they can carry out the work for you. Remember that working at height can be incredibly dangerous. Without the right equipment and expertise, you could do serious damage to your property and more importantly, to yourself.

Cleaning your flat roof

Autumn is always a good time to clean your flat roof as this is the season when the leaves fall from the trees. Gently clear any debris with a brush before any cleaning commences.

You may want to use a pressure washer to clean your flat roof. This environmentally friendly method has become increasingly popular as no chemicals are required. A gasoline-powered pressure washer easily removes any moss and algae that has grown as a result of stagnating water. However, it can take some time to wash and clean the entire area.

Alternatively, you may want to opt for a chlorine solution wash. This method is considerably quicker and can mean less wear and tear as it doesn’t require hours of washing and spraying. However, chlorine can be toxic for some people and plants. Therefore, care does need to be taken if you choose this solution to clean your flat roof.

The other option is sodium hydroxide. Equally as effective, it can take a little longer to complete as the method requires more intensive rinsing as a chlorine solution. It is also worth noting that if the sodium hydroxide solution used is too concentrated it can actually cause significant and irreversible damage to your flat roof.
