Has your flat roof deteriorated, does it need replacing?
Have you been caught out by the torrential rain and high winds we’ve been experiencing?
One minute we’re planning barbecues and family days out; the next, digging out umbrellas and wellingtons!
Winds of up to 50mph had hit Wales and the southern coastal areas of England and rain hit the north and Scotland. Not exactly the summer holidays we were hoping for. Looking at the news for the next few days, it looks as if we will be seeing more unsettled weather.
We often lament about how unsettled the British weather can be. Yet for many people it’s not just a case of moaning about soggy sausages and abandoned outdoor activities. Rain and wind in the middle of summer can be incredibly damaging and expensive to our homes. Those jobs we’ve been putting off until autumn may suddenly need our attention a lot earlier.
You may not have had to use your heating for the past few months. Have you bothered getting it serviced or decided to wait until it gets a little colder? What if the temperature suddenly drops and there’s a problem with the boiler?
And what about your roof?
If your flat roof started to fail towards the end of spring, the temptation is to leave it until after the summer. It is an expensive job and many of us make excuses for not doing it immediately. We console ourselves by saying that the ‘chance’ is that only a little light rain will fall in the next few months (we remain hopeful every year no matter how many times we’ve been proved wrong!)
With rain expected for the south east, south west, Wales and West Midlands, are you confident that your flat roof is up to the task of protecting your home over the summer?
Is your flat roof leaking?
After recent downpours, it should be fairly easy to spot whether your flat roof is leaking. You will either see signs of dampness in the ceiling below, or water may actually be dripping.
If this is happening, you must take into consideration the potential damage that is being done to the joists, as well as the plaster. Plus, do have anything of value in the room below the leak? Putting off repairing or replacing your flat roof can be incredibly costly.
Replacing your flat roof in the summer.
There is one huge benefit to replacing your flat roof in the summer – there won’t be a long wait. Historically, the busiest time for a roofing company is during the colder months. It makes sense – this is when people realise there is a problem and need to get it sorted as soon as possible.
However, this higher demand does, in turn, lead to longer turnaround times. It can also take longer to actually replace your flat roof as roofing installers are unable to work in adverse weather conditions.
