Flat Roofing Penge – the local area
Penge is in the London Borough of Bromley, lying close to Crystal Palace Park. Its name is derived from Celtic words, which are translated as ‘head of the wood’. In the early 19th Century, the Croydon canal was constructed, which was replaced by a railway in 1839.
Penge is only 7 miles away from Charing Cross, London’s traditional centre. In Victorian times, Penge became a fashionable day out as it was so close to the Crystal Palace – a cast iron and plate glass structure which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. There were also twenty-five pubs and two music halls in close proximity.
Bill Wyman, bassist with The Rolling Stones, lived in Penge when he was a child; the famous Victorian plumbing manufacturer, Thomas Crapper, retired to live in Penge from 1897 to 1910.
