The theft of roof lead has become a bigger problem as the value of metal has increased. So how can you protect your roof lead from thieves?

Sadly, wherever in the world you live, there will always be people who think that it’s ok to take things that aren’t theirs. Pickpockets, burglars, roof lead thieves – wait, what?

Yes, you did read that correctly. As the value of metal has soared, the theft of lead from roofs has increased. Metal’s scrap value continues to be high, making roof lead an attractive target for potential thieves.

Churches tend to be the hardest hit, but schools, commercial premises and private homes can also be targeted. This type of theft is not only highly annoying and inconvenient, but can actually end up costing you thousands. Even though it’s not your fault, your insurance premiums are very likely to rise, particularly if you are a repeat target of roof lead thieves.

So what can you do to protect your roof lead from thieves? What security measures can you as homeowners or business owners take to minimise the chance of your roof becoming a lead theft victim?

Here is a list of ways you can protect your roof lead from thieves:

  1. Ensure that all gates are locked and that your building is protected by a fence or hedge to prevent people or vehicles from accessing your property.
  2. Want to deter thieves? Installing security equipment such as security cameras, alarms and lighting sensors will make a huge difference.
  3. Put up warning signs to show that CCTV is in operation and that all thieves will be prosecuted. Are you part of your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme? Make sure you put up any relevant stickers to show that your property is being monitored.
  4. Apply anti-climb paint to roof guttering and drain pipes. This will make it far more difficult for thieves to access the roof. Please make sure that you use warning notices whenever applying anti-climb paint and only use it on piping over 2 metres.
  5. Don’t make it easy for potential thieves by providing them with easy access to your roof. Remove any items they can climb on, such as ladders, bins and water butts, lock them away and protect your roof lead from thieves.
  6. Have you heard of Smart Water? This liquid DNA marks lead and other valuables, which, if stolen, leaves traces on the thief. The offenders can then be detected and prosecuted. If you have been persistently targeted by lead roof thieves, using Smart Water may reduce insurance premiums.
  7. Report any roof lead theft to the police as soon as it happens. The police can then issue warnings to other local residents and business owners, helping to increase the chances of catching those responsible.
  8. If you don’t know your neighbours well, now is the time to introduce yourself. The stronger the community, the better the support. If anyone notices any suspicious activity, you are far more likely to hear about it if your neighbours know you personally.
