Don’t be caught out by flat roofer rogue traders – trust High Tech

An awareness campaign has been launched by   The Federation of Master Builders (FMB)  and the   National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC)  offering greater protection to consumers from rogue tradesmen.

The campaign, called ‘Good Neighbours Stop Rogue Traders’, has been launched to encourage neighbours, friends, family and carers to be more vigilant of doorstep criminals and mindful of those people that could be most at risk of this in their communities.

Research shows there could be up to 170,000 incidents of doorstep crime each year. The criminals target vulnerable members of the community. These people feel obliged to pay for work that is below standard or incomplete; they may also overcharge fees or threaten people that are unwilling to comply.

It also sets out to encourage people to carry out more thorough checks of traders before asking them to carry out work for them.

These checks can be undertaken in a number of ways, in order to help ensure that you, or someone you know, doesn’t fall victim to a rogue tradesman and include:

  • Asking for recommendations of applicable tradesman through friends or family.
  • Obtaining a number of quotes (at least three) prior to choosing your tradesman.
  • Checking your potential tradesman on sites such as www.checkatrade.com or www.trustatrader.com .
  • Ensure that the tradesman is fully insured for the work they are going to carry out.
  • Check the tradesman’s references and if possible, have a look at similar work they have carried out.
  • Produce a detailed written document of the work you would like them to carry out, ensuring their quote covers all this work.

The campaign is partnership led by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI), Citizens Advice and the National Trading Standards Board.

The Trading Standards Institute website includes suggestions as to how local communicates can get involved in this campaign, these include:

  • Organising a coffee morning with community members to discuss doorstop crime and share information.
  • Conducting a doorstep crime workshop that includes the people at risk of doorstep crime.
  • Encouraging neighbours to volunteer for a Nominated Neighbour Scheme.
